the love of asking questions

April 14th, 2009
by Michael

In doing some quick research for a faculty workshop I’ll be leading, I stumbled up Professor Michael Wesch’s acceptance speech for U.S. Professor of the Year. What strikes me about his short speech is what he says about the importance of asking questions–the real questions of our lives, the ones that matter.

I was just curious to see if this site was still around … and I HAVE to comment on this video! Apparently all great teachers are the ones you don’t expect to take, haha. I was originally signed up for someone else’s COM101 class… but had to change my schedule to accommodate another class I signed up for. Lucky me :) I could really say most of the same things (that Kevin says) about you.

Also… through a chat system on your website I had a conversation with you (in COM102) about a piece of literature I didn’t understand first time around… and I told you how I felt uncomfortable participating in class because I only had questions… no answers… and you told me that smart people don’t just have opinions… that they ask questions… and that people can ask smart questions. I never forgot that conversation. It was a real eye-opener.

The similarities in the kind of professor he seems to be and the kind of professor I see you as are uncanny! :)

Kristen, you are very kind. I appreciate your comment and am confident that you will make an excellent teacher, yourself. :-)
