no x-rays, no service — seriously??

October 28th, 2009
by Christine

Well, today I took Aidan to the dentist for a regular check-up and cleaning. Overall it was a good check-up — no cavities, five loose teeth, one new molar, and everything looked healthy. However, the moment when I said we didn’t want x-rays I was then informed by our dentist that if we decide not to get x-rays at the next cleaning we will no longer be accepted as patients at that office.  Seriously? Seriously! I was flabbergasted. Now I should say that our dentist was not entirely obtrusive or overly rude, but there were several comments that made me feel as if I was being bullied and coerced into something. It’s not that I don’t think x-rays are never needed, and I’m sure at some point we will get x-rays, but at this time we chose not to and I think we should have this right.  One thing I do know is that when it is time for our next cleaning (or for that matter when we do decide to get x-rays) we will be doing so with a different dentist–one who respects our decisions.

I completely agree with you. I’ve declined x-rays in the past for the kids and it was never an issue with our dentists. Of course, they “recommend’ them, but I was never refused service for declining them! I’d definitely find another dentist, and I’d let your current dentist know exactly why you are leaving their practice. Make sure they know you may opt for x-rays in the future, but they won’t be getting your business.

Good for you! Yes there are holistic dentists out there and also those who will respect your decisions. I have found this to be true with medical doctors. I inquired about this when I had to change doctors. The one I have now respects my decisions about what I want done with my body. If I refuse a test offered me, he listens and understands why I am refusing. This is how it should be. It is a shame that more doctors and dentists are not concerned with their patients decisions. I know you will find the right one for you.

    Karyn,

Thanks for your comments. I am definitely going to let the dentist know why we are not coming back! I just couldn’t believe they would tell me we aren’t welcome back unless we get x-rays!

Thanks! I am looking into holistic dentists (or at least one that will respect our wishes)!
