no x-rays, no service — seriously??

Well, today I took Aidan to the dentist for a regular check-up and cleaning. Overall it was a good check-up — no cavities, five loose teeth, one new molar, and everything looked healthy. However, the moment when I said we didn’t want x-rays I was then informed by our dentist that if we decide not to get x-rays at the next cleaning we will no longer be accepted as patients at that office.  Seriously? Seriously! I was flabbergasted. Now I should say that our dentist was not entirely obtrusive or overly rude, but there were several comments that made me feel as if I was being bullied and coerced into something. It’s not that I don’t think x-rays are never needed, and I’m sure at some point we will get x-rays, but at this time we chose not to and I think we should have this right.  One thing I do know is that when it is time for our next cleaning (or for that matter when we do decide to get x-rays) we will be doing so with a different dentist–one who respects our decisions.
